The Value of Simplicity: Why the Best Cocktails Don't Need to Impress

A cocktail with twelve ingredients, an elaborate preparation, and a spectacular presentation can certainly attract attention. But when it comes to tasting it, how much does all of that really matter?

In recent years, mixology has expanded its possibilities enormously. Infusions, clarification, fermentation, and techniques borrowed from fine dining have transformed the work behind the bar. Yet some of the most appreciated cocktails are still made with just three or four ingredients.

It is not a contradiction. It is a reminder that, even in contemporary mixology, complexity does not necessarily mean quality.

Simplicity Is a Choice, Not a Shortcut

Think of the Daiquiri. Rum, lime, and sugar. Three ingredients that, in the right hands, create one of the most elegant cocktails in the history of mixology.

Or the Martini, where gin and vermouth create a delicate balance of nuances, temperature, and precision. Or the Negroni, which has become an international icon thanks to its essential and recognizable structure.

These cocktails demonstrate that a short recipe is not necessarily an easy one. In fact, when there are fewer ingredients, every mistake becomes more noticeable.

There are no unnecessary elements to hide an incorrect proportion or a poorly chosen spirit.

When Technique Becomes Invisible

One of the most interesting qualities of a good bartender is the ability to make something that requires experience appear completely natural.

The choice of ice, the temperature of the glass, the mixing time, and dilution all have a significant impact on the final result. These are details guests may not consciously notice, but they can immediately recognize the difference with the first sip.

In contemporary mixology, technique does not necessarily have to take center stage. It can remain behind the scenes, serving the flavor.

The best result is not always the one that requires a five-minute explanation. Sometimes, it is simply a cocktail that works perfectly.

Signature Cocktails: Creativity Also Means Knowing What to Remove

When we talk about signature cocktails,, it is easy to imagine complex recipes, unusual ingredients, and surprising combinations.

But creativity is not just about adding something new.

A bartender might begin with an idea involving several elements and discover, during testing, that the result improves when one is removed. An aroma becomes more recognizable, a bitter note finds its place, and the spirit returns to the foreground.

It is a process similar to many other creative disciplines: sometimes, the hardest part is knowing when to stop.

A well-crafted cocktail does not need to demonstrate how many things its creator can do. It needs an identity of its own.

Flavor Comes Before Presentation

Visual presentation has become an important part of contemporary cocktail culture. Unusual glassware, elaborate garnishes, and surprising colors have become part of the experience.

A carefully considered presentation can enhance a drink, suggest its character, and make it instantly recognizable.

But there is a difference between a presentation that complements a cocktail and one that tries to replace its substance.

The decisive moment remains the first taste. That is when we discover whether the ingredients have found their balance and whether the recipe delivers what its appearance promises.

A cocktail can look beautiful in a photograph. But to be remembered, it must first and foremost be enjoyable to drink.

Simplicity in Milan's Cocktail Culture

Milan is a city where cocktail culture continues to evolve. Alongside the great classics, there is room for new interpretations, themed cocktail menus, and creations that explore different ingredients and techniques.

For anyone looking for a cocktail bar in Milan, this variety offers an interesting opportunity: choosing between very different experiences without compromising on quality.

But precisely because the city's cocktail scene is so diverse, the ability to create a distinctive drink becomes essential.

Not every cocktail needs to surprise through complexity. Some win people over with their freshness, others with their aromatic depth, and others simply through a particularly successful combination of familiar ingredients.

UGO and the Search for Identity in the Glass

At UGO Cocktail Bar – Bistrot, on Via Corsico in Milan's Navigli district, cocktail research is expressed through the coexistence of great classics and original creations.

The new Cocktail Odyssey 2026 reflects this approach through a planet-inspired menu, where familiar cocktail structures become the starting point for personal interpretations.

One example is Uranus, which takes the identity of the Espresso Martini and develops it through vodka, coffee, Amaro Nonino, and black cherry.

It shows how creativity can begin with something familiar and develop a different character without losing its connection to the original cocktail.

The goal is not to make every drink more complicated, but to find the most interesting way to express an idea.

A Good Cocktail Has Nothing to Prove

Perhaps this is the most interesting paradox of mixology: the more technical knowledge grows, the more important it becomes to know when not to use it.

Some cocktails require long and sophisticated preparations, while others are created by combining just a few ingredients. Both can achieve extraordinary results.

The difference lies not in the number of steps or the complexity of the recipe, but in how well the final result comes together.

In a good cocktail bar in Navigli, as in any other place dedicated to mixology, true quality emerges when technique, ingredients, and creativity work towards the same goal.

Because ultimately, a cocktail does not need to impress the person drinking it.

It simply needs to make them want to take another sip.

UGO Cocktail Bar in the Navigli area of Milan offers a vibrant atmosphere and a delightful cocktail menu. The highlight is definitely the Banana Olong Tea—an expertly crafted drink that beautifully balances the richness of banana with the floral notes of oolong tea. It's refreshing and perfect for autumn evenings, making it a must-try for anyone visiting. The bar's ambiance complements the drink perfectly, with a lively crowd and attentive staff. A great spot to unwind and enjoy unique flavors!

We made a reservation for a busy Saturday night & had a great table that was on the edge of inside and outside - so you can take in all the action going on out front, but remain comfortable and cool with the AC going inside! Staff were excellent despite being super busy. The drink were exceptional and we loved the clever menu. Also appreciated the apertivo spread was a bit creative but not too heavy. Well done UGO!

Great theming and cocktails, nicely tucked away out of the main stream of foot traffic along the canal.
